What’s the one thing you can pump up to be happier, healthier and wealthier?
Everyone thinks about how they can make their lives better. What better means is different for each person obviously. There’s one thing in common when it comes to realising dreams. There’s one thing that you can strengthen that can give you the power to make your dreams come true.

There’s a picture of Michael Jordan, one of the greatest athletes of all time. Here’s why.
I remember a journalist was doing a story about Jordan when he moved from basketball to baseball. He was talking about Jordan’s work ethic, the strength of his will. He says Jordan would get to the practice field just before the sun came in, hit balls until the rest of the team arrived, train with them, and then hit balls again until the sun went down.
He’d leave the field with his hands bleeding. That was when Sports Illustrated ran the article you see here.
I remember watching the journalist say as much, and then say that he hopes one day his kids are an embarrassment to him like Michael Jordan was to baseball.
Willpower, self-control, delayed gratification. It’s something we’ve all thought about, it’s something we probably all consider important. What most people don’t know is just how important willpower is.
It’s a big part of the reason guys like Michael Jordan succeed at everything they do, including playing TWO sports professionally, becoming one of the greatest (if not the greatest) ever at one of those sports, and why he’s been unbelievably successful in business.
The truth is, if you have it, you will be happy, wealthy and wise. And if you don’t, your relationships and career will probably fail. That’s not an exaggeration. It’s what the science says. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8)
Makes sense. Think about when you have that self-discipline battle about whether or not to do something you know you should or shouldn’t. The decision to take the right action ALWAYS yields a better outcome than taking the short cut, doesn’t it?
If you’re not 100% happy with the way you look, it’s not because of genetics or anything else. It’s because you lack willpower. Same for your health. And like the science shows, same for your relationships and your career. By allowing your willpower to yield, you’ve missed opportunities, you’ve had unnecessary relationship hurt, and you’re not as far as you want to be in your career.
Take control of your willpower, or you’ll live half a life.
Here’s what boosts willpower.
- Exercise to strengthen the willpower muscle.
- Remove temptation, to avoid unnecessary battles.
- Measure progress. What is measured is managed.
- Mental rehearsal to prep the mind.
- Prepare challenge tactics, ways to overcome the inevitable temptations that are coming, to make healthier choices.
- Build the tactics into old habits, to fall back to in times of stress.
- Not doing everything at once and overloading the system. Remember, it’s not a sprint, it’s a jog. You gotta keep moving if you want your life to keep getting better.
The life you live is within your control. Some of those studies I quoted earlier that willpower is at least as important as family background and financial status. You can strengthen your willpower, and it will improve your life.
